Yohaku no Bi | The Beauty of Empty Space

​A large-scale wall piece in hand-coloured black porcelain, framed on pale grey and black grounds. Each element is individually press-moulded onto plaster moulds of origami-folded fabric, capturing the geometry of the fold in a permanent medium.
The composition divides the square frame into two fields: form and its absence. Porcelain elements arc across one half; the other holds only ground and shadow. The circle is implied rather than completed. What is withheld carries equal weight to what is present.
Yohaku no bi is the Japanese concept of the beauty of empty space. This approach values quiet moments and impermanence. In a busy world full of noise and distraction, it reminds us to pause, and to notice the quiet beauty in what is not said or shown. In this piece, the empty half of the composition is not background. It is part of the work.
