Capturing the Light in 3D...
The starting point for this work was my Grandfather Silvester's beautiful hand carved mantle shelf which sits above the fireplace in my dining room.
The words 'POST TENEBRAS LUX’ and their meaning 'Light After Darkness’ fascinated me as a child and took on even greater significance after our shared Covid experience, when life slowed down, time seemed endless, the clock ticked slowly and we saw Nature, the seasons and the changing light with fresh eyes. After the darkness of Covid it seemed like we had emerged back into the daylight. This series of porcelain sculptures captures the changing hues of light through different time frames. In essence — painting light in 3D, with porcelain. Moreover, these delicate and intriguing porcelain sculptures are designed to play with light and shadow. Dramatic with angled lighting, they dance with light in the sun. As always, colour is worked into the porcelain body and the surface and edge ripples come from pressing the porcelain onto moulds of folded origami. The porcelain is unglazed and fired right through to 1248ºC. Peaceful and contemplative works. . Daybreak . Day's End . Sunset (SOLD) . The Midnight Hour . From Dawn to Dusk . Dappled Light .
