Postern SpiralSOLD
My representation of a limestone spiral staircase in York's Fishergate Postern Tower. Built in 1505, the tower has four floors all reached via a fantastic spiral staircase. Leased by The Friends of York Walls, you can visit the tower and ascend the staircase on one of the open days. Limestone is a sedimentary rock and one way it can be formed is by the shells of sea creatures being broken down and settling on the ocean floor. Over millions of years they are compacted to create limestone. To create the ripples and reflect the sedimentary process, each piece of porcelain is individually pressed with scallop shells and ammonite fossils. Approximately 140 pieces. The mount and oak frame is custom made and hand-painted. Framed and ready to hang 48 x 48cm |
