The Midnight Hour, 2022
Moonlight breaks through the clouds.
Deep rich tones of hand coloured porcelain rolled, cut and press moulded onto plaster moulds of origami-folded fabric, this creates the rippled edge.
See how the porcelain and its shadows change as day changes to night.
The mount and frame is custom made, hand-painted with a rich blue and edged with oak.
Framed and ready to hang 56 x 27cm
Currently on display at Newcastle Cathedral as part of the Northern Potters Association LIGHT exhibition.
Capturing the Light in 3D...
My work focuses on light and shadow and the starting point for this work was my Grandfather Silvester's beautiful hand carved mantle shelf which sits above the fireplace in my dining room.
The words 'POST TENEBRAS LUX’ and their meaning 'Light After Darkness’ fascinated me as a child and took on even greater significance after our world's shared experience over the last two extraordinary years.
Like creatures thrown into darkness we have begun to emerge back into daylight.
This series of porcelain sculptures captures the changing hues of light through different time frames. In essence - painting light in 3D, with porcelain.
As always, colour is worked into the porcelain body and the surface and edge ripples come from pressing the porcelain onto moulds of folded origami.
The porcelain is unglazed and fired right through to 1248ºC.
Peaceful and contemplative works.
