Light After Darkness Series, porcelain art by York artist Kate Buckley

A series of porcelain sculptures that capture the changing hues of light through different time frames. In essence - painting light in 3D, with porcelain.

My work focuses on light and shadow and the starting point for this work was my Grandfather Silvester's beautiful hand carved mantle shelf which sits above the fireplace in my dining room (see top of this page).
The words 'POST TENEBRAS LUX’ and their meaning 'Light After Darkness’ fascinated me as a child and took on even greater significance in our shared recent history.
Like creatures thrown into darkness we emerged back into daylight.

As always, colour is worked into the porcelain body and the surface and edge ripples come from pressing the porcelain onto moulds of folded origami.
The porcelain is unglazed and fired right through to 1250ºC.

Night and Day - the cycle of twenty-four hours of light captured in hand coloured porcelain. SOLD
Day Break - the dawn light breaks, a fresh new morning awakes
Day's End - golden hour leads into sunset, the last whisper of light and then dusk. SOLD
The Midnight Hour - the moon's light breaks through the clouds
Dawn to Dusk - the changing light of a summer's day and night SOLD
The Golden Hour - rich golden sunlight at the end of the day SOLD
Dappled Light - sunshine filtering through the overhead leaves SOLD
Eclipse - light, then shadow, as the moon is eclipsed SOLD
Light Shards - defracted light, fine porcelain tiles, subtle highlights of 24 carat gold, encased in resin and mounted on a heavy wooden block

Here you can see how the porcelain and its shadows change depending on the lighting - 'Day Break', 'Day's End' and 'Midnight' in daylight and night-time overhead light. The standing sphere in the second image is a front-on view of 'Eclipse'.
